Why Do Some People Think Timeshare Is Bad?

Written by Alexander Barbara on May 4, 2006

Vacation timeshare appeals to as wide a range of consumers as there are people in the world. Timeshare owners include executives, young married couples, families with children, and even “empty nesters”. By purchasing a deeded interval, females can enjoy their timeshare for decades and then pass it on to their children. Vacation timeshare is truly the gift that keeps on giving. So then– why does the media sometimes portray timeshare in a negative way?

Although timeshare is really a simple concept, once you start looking at week assignment and swapping for worldwide exchange, it can get very complicated. Many people do not understand how timeshare exchange works, and it is not easy to explain.

With millions of members, the world’s largest timeshare exchange agency, Resorts & Condominiums International, uses a complicated system to ensure a ‘like for like’ exchange that satisfies its owners. This complex system requires mainframe computers that are constantly analyzing every resort’s availability, along with their location, amenities, customer reviews, and overall demand by other members. It is a continually evolving system of supply and demand, where exchange availability can change in a few seconds.

Although a member’s ideal exchange might have been available one day, with thousands of members planning their next vacation every day, it is simply impossible to satisfy every customer all of the time, especially for areas and seasons that are in the highest demand.

It is impossible to satisfy every member all of the time. Unfortunately, new timeshare owners sometimes give up too soon. They have their sights set on a particular place in a particular week, and aren’t willing to budge.

Timeshare will put thousands of resorts, from America to Australia, at your fingertips. But because the availability changes so often, owners must be flexible. In fact, the key to happiness with timeshare is flexibility. Instead of searching for one specific week in one location, you should search for a range of weeks in several locations. With a constantly changing system, this increases your likelihood of getting a desirable exchange.

If you don’t like what you’ve found, search again. Availability changes very often, and many owners conduct a few searches before selecting an exchange and planning a vacation. In doing so, however, you risk losing the availability that you found in the system– because someone else might book it first.

The constantly changing inventory is precisely why RCI offers a continuous search option, where owners enter their search preferences and the mainframe compujter notifies them once the desired accommodations are available. This could take from one hour to six (or more) months, because each resort has its own policies on when they submit vacation inventory to RCI. Again, the key to happiness is being flexible.

Does this sound complicated? Of course it SEEMS complicated– but it really isn’t. With RCI’s fully featured web site, you can conduct a search in a few seconds, anytime, day or night. It is very easy to use. If you don’t feel comfortable using the web site, you can call and speak to a vacation exchange specialist. They can guide you through the process.

Millions of RCI members exchange their timeshare every year. According to industry research, virtually all of them are satisfied with their purchase. Although a very small number, relatively speaking, are not, they are the ones most often mentioned in the media.

Timeshare ownership will allow you to travel the world at a low cost. You will enjoy spacious, high quality accommodations that often include every luxury, from televisions and DVD players to Jacuzzi tubs and full kitchens. Once you tour a resort and see the quality of vacations you will enjoy with timeshare, you won’t want to go back to a hotel.

Despite a sometimes negative portrayal in the media, timeshare ownership is the future of vacationing. It has changed the way that millions of families travel. After your family enjoys a luxurious timeshare suite, I am sure you will feel the same way. You might find, as we have, thbat timeshare is the best purchase you have ever made.
